Continuation charting is a method of technical analysis that identifies long-term trends and cycles in futures. Because futures expire, data on a given contract doesn't span a great deal of time--in some cases, less than a year. Continuation charting chains lead-month contracts together using two, user-definable methods, thereby making long-term analysis possible.
See Chart Properties Continuation Tab for more information on how to defines these continuation methods.
To invoke a continuation chart, user the following syntax:
<future symbol root>'c1
For example, to create a continuation using method 1 on CME Feeder Cattle, you would enter,
FC'C1
Note that the case sensitivity of symbols varies from feed-to-feed.
To use method 2, you would simply substitute a 2 for the 1 in the example above.
You can also display a future and build a continuation from it. You can do this by entering a lead-month future in a chart and then issuing either of the following commands:
Command |
Effect |
.MAKEC1 |
Invokes a continuation chart using method 1. |
.MAKEC2 |
Invokes a continuation chart using method 2. |
